It's always sunny at the Naval Yard in Philadelphia - where a once barely used dock is about to see new life thanks to one Korean auto maker.
Starting in early June, Kia Motors will send 150,000 cars a year from South Korea through the Port of Philadelphia, headed for U.S. showrooms. One of these dealerships, Lokey Kia will see arrivals including the all new Kia Soul and upcoming Forte Koupe.
Before a crowd on Wednesday April 28th, PA Gov. Rendell, Philadelphia Mayor Nutter, and port officials hailed the deal, more than a year in the making. Kia vehicles will be sent through Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in South Philadelphia.
"This is great news for the city of Philadelphia, the Port of Philadelphia, the region, and the commonwealth," Gov. Rendell said, to cheers.
"It is about jobs, about putting Philadelphians and people in the region to work. These are great jobs," Mayor Nutter told the crowd.
An estimated 102 ships a year carrying the cars from South Korea will sail up the Delaware River. They will make several stops, including on the West Coast, and at Brunswick, Ga.
Philadelphia snagged this win over ports in New York City and Port Newark in New Jersey.
